Coachella Girl watch 2014
We are exactly four weeks away from the official Coachella kickoff, and I am getting very VERY excited. One of my favorite things about this festival is getting to see some of my favorite musicians and bands, but also learning about amazing new acts. Last year I got to see Savages and I instantly fell in love, so I created a list of my top five must see female acts for 2014 that you may or may not have heard of (I apologize for the genres, it’s so hard to classify music nowadays):
Friday April 11th & 18th
Austra (Electronic): These ladies (and dude) from Canada are really fun to watch. I saw them at the El Rey last year and they were great to dance to, plus who doesn’t like to see a girl play drums?
Caravan Palace (Electro Swing and Gypsy Jazz): Need I say more? These Parisian’s new album “Panic” just debuted on March 5th and they are definitely on my dance party list.
Dum Dum Girls (Rock): They are one of my personal favorites! I got to know this band after I heard Dee Dee (Kristin Gundred) who played drums and sang for “Grand Ole Party”, had started a new band (did I mention I have a thing for female drummers?). These girls are gonna rock your flower crowns off. DO NOT MISS!
The Preatures (Rock n‘ Roll): This band from Australia is fantastic, front woman Isabella Manfredi is smoking and has a killer voice. Can’t wait to be dancing to this band out in the desert.
Goat (Progressive Rock/ Vodoo?): I haven’t seen this band play live yet but their singer is amazing! They are Swedish, so to me that is pretty much a guarantee of good music, and they usually wear masks because mystery. Check out the video for their song “Let it bleed”.
The Knife, Ellie Goulding, Grouplove, Haim, Kate Nash, MS MR, Nina Kraviz, Neko Case, Waxahatchee, Wye Oak and ZZ Ward also include very talented ladies performing this day.
Saturday April 12th & 19th
Banks (Dark R&B): I was driving to work one morning and they played “Before I ever met you” on KCRW, it was a “shit where’s my phone so I can Shazam this?” car moment. Smooth and soulful is all I’m saying about this woman.
Warpaint (Indie Rock): I lost count of how many times I have seen this foursome. They are LA locals first of all, so we have to support, but also super rad. They have an anything goes vibe and their music is great. If you haven’t heard their new album, you should.
Lorde (Singer-Songwriter/Pop): I know, I know…everyone is already planning on seeing her, but I thought I should include this 16 year old Kiwi in case for some reason you have been living under a rock this past year. She is so good live!
Sleigh Bells (Noise pop): Alexis Krauss, Alexis Krauss, Alexis Krauss, that is all.
Carbon Airways (Electro-rock): Holy Merde! French brother and sister Eleonore and Enguerand are only 16 and 15 years old and are already pretty damn good! It seems that Saturday is teen day at Coachella so let’s go back to our days of endless party energy and dance with these young dudes.
Chvrches, Laura Mvula (what’s up with all the V’s?), Nicole Moudaber, Solange, The head and the heart and The naked and famous are the other acts with awesome women.
Sunday April 13th & 20th
Daughter (Sexy Rock): Elena Tonra’s voice is just ridiculous! As if the heat wasn’t making us melt enough this band’s music is so hot and smooth. I hope I can watch them with a drink in hand somehow.
Little Dragon (Electronic): another one of those bands I have seen as often as possible. I love to see Yikimi jumping around stage being amazing always delivering impeccable performances. Dancing is highly encouraged.
Courtney Barnett (Folk Rock): Another Aussie woman who not only rocks but also started her own label Milk!Records and self released her first EP, talk about badass! Her lyrics are very witty and I’ve heard her live performances are memorable.
Jhene Aiko (R&B): Her lyrics are great and powerful and her voice super sultry. I am sure she’s going to kill it.
AlunaGeorge (Electornic): This duo from London is perfect for a hot desert afternoon. Singer Aluna Francis has a very sweet voice that is accompanied by George Reid’s beats. They have been described as R&B, Experimental, House, Garage and Dubstep and they are as interesting as all these genres combined sound.
Anna Lunoe, Arcade Fire, Krewella, Lana Del Rey, Factory Floor and Superchunk should also be on your girl watch for the day.
Sooo, upload these Rockin’ chicks to your schedulers ASAP and get your dancing shoes ready (preferably not open toed so you don’t get stepped on). See you out there!
